Abstract

Marked intensity effects governed by Franck-Condon overlap factors between low quantum number vibronic levels have been observed in benzene. Calculated Franck-Condon factors for transitions involving two or less quanta of excited electronic state modes and up to six quanta of ground state modes are compared with experiment. Good agreement is found. The marked effects, which include almost total cancellation of some transitions, are quite helpful in making assignments.
