Abstract
The normal-incidence polarized specular reflection spectra of hexahelicene in the near ultraviolet and their Kramers-Kronig transforms have been obtained at $300^\circ K$ . Because disagreement exists in previous studies on the polarization of the hexahelicene transitions, spectra have been obtained from two different faces of the racemic crystal. These studies afford a relatively direct analysis of the polarization of the transitions. The somewhat congested spectra allow the assignment of the first six singlet transitions. The results are compared with previous measurements of the circular dichroism and linear dichroism of hexahelicene obtained by study of a stretched polyethylene film. Comparison is made to various quantum chemical calculations of the hexahelicene spectrum and results of a resonance force calculation are also presented. Crystal exciton interactions are found but are weak.
