Abstract

The infrared spectra of solid cis and trans 1-2 dichloroethylenes were examined with 0.3 to $0.6 cm^{-1}$ resolution in the $4000-200 cm^{-1}$ region at temperatures between -80 and $-250^{\circ}C$. Improved spectra were also obtained in the gaseous and liquid phases for comparison purposes. Raman shifts of the liquids and of the solids condensed on an improved all metal low temperature cell were obtained using laser excitation. Possible structures of the solids compatible with observed density changes, band splittings and appearance of forbidden bands will be discussed.
