Abstract
The equations describing vibrational relaxation in binary mixtures of diatomic gases have been set up in linearized form. Energy transfer involving the translation to vibration processes and the vibration to vibration exchange processes are included. Analytical solution of the equation have been used to interpret shock tube data on simple mixtures such as $N_{2}+CO$ and $CO+O_{2}$ with the aim of determining vibration to vibration exchange rates. Available results will be discussed in the light of theoretical predictions of these rates.
