Abstract

A number of monosubstituted ethanols of the type $CH_{2}XCH_{2}OH$ have been reported as possessing an intermolecular hydrogen bond, and thus providing the gauche form of the molecule with extra stability. As a preliminary study in this field the microwave spectrum of 2-fluoroethanol has been investigated and the gauche form of the molecule assigned. Transitions belonging to the trans from and to excited vibrational states of both forms are currently being south. The results will be discussed in terms of the proposed hydrogen bonding.
