Abstract

The reactions of lithium atoms with $^{12}CCl_{4}, I^{13}CCl_{4}$ or $BrCCl_{2}$ have been studied by simultaneously condensing molecular beams of lithium and the chlorocarbon diluted in argon on a cesium iodide window at $14^{\circ} K$. Lithium chloride and bromide are produced during sample deposition, along with several new absorptions which are not due to any known stable chlorocarbon species. These new absorptions disappear on sample warming. Normal co-orinate calculations indicate that the most intense of these new bands and its carbon-13 counterpart are $\nu_{3}$ of trichloromethyl radical. The vibrational assignments and implications of the molecular structure will be discussed.
