Abstract

The origin of the strong allowed out-of-plane transition found in the quartz ultra-violet region for $PtCl_{4}^{2-}$ and related square-planar complexes has not yet been totally resolved. Partially with the motivation of providing further experimental evidence on which to base this assignment, the polarized single-crystal reflection spectra of a series of Pd and Pt Magnus-type salts of the form ${[M{(NH_{3})}_{4}]}^{2+}{[MX_{4}]}^{2-}$, where M = Pt, Pd and X=Cl, Br, I, have been measured. These spectra and the absorption spectra derived from them will be presented and discussed in terms of current theory for planar complexes.
