Abstract
The analysis navigates how contemporary female protagonists influence popular culture’s understanding of femininity. My research explores the impact of prevalent female protagonists within popular culture and how these characters impact culture’s perception of females and femininity, as well as intersecting identities of race, class, and ethnicity. This thesis intends to examine young adult literature, especially the stories of Twilight and The Hunger Games. The examination of these two main characters, Bella Swan and Katniss Everdeen, will result in furthering the understanding of how contemporary literary characters influence and direct culture’s opinion towards gender, race, class, and ethnicity. The analysis concludes with the examination of fanfiction and how readers of The Hunger Games and Twilight interact and manipulate the original texts of these two series.
