Abstract

Vibrational circular dichroism spectra of several steroidal compounds containing two carbonyl groups on six-membered rings have been measured in the $C=O$ stretching region. The results have been compared to the predictions of the degenerate coupled oscillator model. The sign and shape of the predicted spectra agree with the observed results in all but one case. The magnitudes generally agree to within a factor of two, with two exceptions. Attempts were made to correct the theory for misalignment of dipoles and non-degeneracy of the oscillators. In general, such corrections did not lead to an improved agreement.
