Abstract

The Maroon Formation consists of interbedded red arkosic sandstone, micaceous shale, and limestone. Skarn mineralization of the Mount Silverheels district is related directly to intrusion of the Montgomery Gulch quartz monzonite porphyry into the Maroon Formation. Skarn minerals formed by the metamorphism and metasomatism of the Maroon Formation include epidote, chlorite, andradite, magnetite, and pyrite. Minor gold is associated with the skarn mineralization.
