Abstract

The reaction of Mg and ozone in inert gas matrices at 14K has been studied. Isotopic substitution of both Mg and O3 aided identification of infrared absorptions due to MgO, MgO2 and MgO3. Infrared and Raman spectra have been observed for the corresponding reactions of ozone with Cd and Zn. Isotopic substitution of O3 in reactions with Zn and Cd aided identification of analogous species with these metals. Comparison of previously investigated alkali metal and alkaline earth-ozone reactions indicate a dependence of product yield on the particular metal, and of ozonide structure and stability on cation size. Similar comparison will be made with the Zn and Cd products.
