Abstract
This project is the continuation of the former Project No. AF 19 (604)-287, the Final Technical Report of which "Research Directed Towards the Application of Gravity Data to the Determination of the Geoid in Eurasia," written by W. A. Heiskanen, was reproduced in two volumes; first volume January, 1957, and second volume (main part) 1956. The present project, "Assembly of Gravity Data," Contract No. AF 19(604)-1963, was signed November 1, 1956. Since the used reduction, analyzing, and computation methods of the gravimetric method we are using are described in detail in the former Final Report, we pay now main attention to the theoretical studies, the practical procedure used, and results obtained during the report period. Maps showing the available gravity material, the status of the isostatic reduction, and the mean free air anomalies of 5°x 5° squares are included. Three graphs illustrate the development of the free air gravity anomalies in spherical harmonics (Legendrians) to 8th degree for flattening values 1:297.0 and 1:298.3 are included. At the end of the Summary are mentioned the most important problems we face now. The extensive references will facilitate the study of the related problems included in the project. An appendix will tell detailed story on the activity in connection with the gravity project.
