Abstract
Terry Tickhill Terrell describes her role on the first women-only scientific expedition to Antarctica. Terrell joined the team in 1969 as an undergraduate at Ohio State, majoring at the time in Chemistry. Terrell first describes how it came about that she joined the team, then she discusses preparations, including extensive tests at Bethesda Naval Hospital to make sure all of the women were physically fit. Terrell then describes their arrival at Antarctica and their subsequent fieldwork. Terrell also discusses some of the obstacles they faced, both physically because of the harsh environment, and those put up by people who treated them differently than other Antarctic researchers because they were women. Terrell talks about the effects the experience had on her personally and professionally, and how this affected the rest of her undergraduate career at Ohio State. She also discusses her career after Ohio State and her retirement activities, including obtaining a Master’s degree in Quilt History.
