Abstract

A beam of light is observed to pass through two crossed polarizers when there is a solution of organic dye between the polarizers, and when the dye is excited to a partially transparent state by an intense, short burst of laser radiation. The effect of the radiation is to cause the dye to become dichroic, so that light passing through the dye has its plane of polarization rotated and can leak through the second polarizer. The amount of light that emerges is sensitive to its own wavelength, to the intensity of exciting radiation, and to the absorption properties of the dye solution in ways that make the dye-polarizer combination potentially useful in time-resolved spectroscopy, pulse shaping, and frequency scanning applications.
