Abstract
The direction of polarized absorption for amides has been determined using polarized light in the vacuum ultraviolet. Single crystals of myristamide, a compound of known crystal structure, were employed. The transition moment for the strong N, V stransition at 1880A makes an angle of 20$^\circ$ with the nitrogen-oxygen axis. Theoretical implications of this finding are briefly discussed.
