Abstract

Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PCAH) is being developed as an in-situ, real time diagnostic technique for monitoring these species in combustion systems. The research is part of a multi-disciplinary $effort^{1}$ to study the origins and health effects of PCAH emissions from combustion sources. The experimental apparatus is based on a flashlamp pumped, frequency-doubled dye laser. Laser operation and data acquisition are under computer control. Excitation and fluorescence spectra of selected PCAH at typical flame temperatures will be compared to their low temperature $(\sim 100^{\circ} C$) spectra. The feasibility of using these spectra as a measure of PCAH concentrations in flames will be discussed. The effect of the broad band (presumably PCAH) fluorescence observed in sooting flames on measurements of flame radicals will also be considered.
