Abstract

Tunable optical parametric oscillation based upon a resonantly-enhanced, four-wave mixing process in simple gases and other centro-symmetric media is shown to have easily attainable threshold requirements and possibly high conversion efficiencies. Several calculations are presented to show that these media, which are easily scalable, and have high damage thresholds when compared to the specialized crystals required for three-wave optical parametric oscillation, may provide useful tunable coherent radiation, even in the infrared region.
