Abstract

The absorption of $CO_{2}$ laser radiation in $SF_{6}$, $WF_{6}$ and $UF_{6}$ has been measured for many $CO_{2}$ laser transitions using optoacoustic detection techniques. Absolute absorption coefficients per Torr as low as $1\times 10^{-7}$$^{c}m {-1}$ $^{T}oor {-1}$ in a 2cm active path length could be measured by taking advantage of calibration measurements performed with $SF_{6}$. In $SF_{6}$ the strongly absorbing $\nu_{3}$ fundamental absorption band and weak combination bands are measured. In $UF_{6}$ and $WF_{6}$ the absorption occurs only in weak combination bands with absorption coefficients per Torr ranging from $3\times 10^{-7}$ to $1\times 10^{-6}$$^{c}m {-1}$ $^{T}orr {-1}$ for $UF_{6}$ and from $3\times 10^{-6}$$^{c}m {-1}$ $^{T}orr {-1}$ to $1\times 10^{-4}$$^{c}m {-1}$ $^{T}orr {-1}$ for $WF_{6}$ depending on the $CO_{2}$ laser transition.
