Knowledge Bank

The spectrum of HOCl in the $6700-7230cm-1$ region has been recorded at $0.01cm-1$ resolution (Doppler limits $0.013cm-1$) on a Bomem DA3.002 Fourier Transform spectrometer. The sample was prepared by admitting $Cl2$ gas into an evacuated flask containing a slime of red mercury oxide and water scattered on the walls. The total pressure was 20 Torr and the pathlength through the multiple reflection cell was 6 m. The $2\nu 1$ band ($7038.7cm-1$) had been observed before [1] at low resolution, and a complete analysis has been carried out for the first time. Work on other overtone and combination bands is on the way.
