Abstract

The novels of Ann Radcliffe exist as those whom helped form the Gothic genre as a whole. Radcliffe wrote her characters to exist in a world in which they are trapped within the confines of their own mind, and the symptoms of mental illness which the female heroines exhibit are a direct result of the environment in which the heroine exists in. Radcliffe leans into the stereotype of hysteria in women, which the environments of her novels exhibit, and which are then "mirrored" onto the heroine.
