Abstract

Excavation of the Bob Evans Rockshelter, Gallia Co., Ohio, is described in terms of Archaic, Early, Middle, and Late Woodland, and Historic components. A pewter button found near the back of the shelter may be related to the documented stay of Daniel Boone and other hunters during the winter of 1792. Faunal analysis reveals little or no change in subsistence pattern through time, with emphasis upon the white-tailed deer and small mammals and turkey. Freshwater naiad shells are relatively common but fish remains are rare.
