Abstract

The microwave spectrum of $CH_{3}CH_{2}COOH$ has been investigated between 12 and 40 Gc. The rotational constants of the ground state are compatible with a planar structure of the skeleton with the methyl group in cis position to the carbonyl group. The dipole moment as determined from Stark effects approximately coincides with the b-direction of the inertial tensor $(\mu \approx \mu_{b} = 1.47 D)$. A sequence of satellite spectra has been attributed to molecules in the excited states of the torsional vibration around the C-C bond, and from relative intensity measurements the fundamental frequency of this mode has been obtained as $58\pm 5 cm^{-1}$. A potential barrier of $2355\pm 50 cal/mole$ hindering internal rotation of the $CH_{3}$ group has been determined from A/E doublets arising from molecules in the first excited state of the methyl torsion.
