Abstract

Single vibronic level fluorescence spectra from low pressure glyoxal vapor have been obtained for 15 different excited states. Vibronic assignments for these spectra will be presented which are consistent with the $^{1}A_{u}-^{1}A_{g}$ electronic transition in glyoxal. These spectra were obtained with pulsed, tunable laser excitation and box car integration techniques which permit the emission to be simultaneously resolved with respect to wavelength and time. Emission (fluorescence and phosphorescence) originating from excited states which have undergone varying degrees of collisional perturbation can therefore be clearly obtained, A discussion of the use of such spectra to unravel the excited state dynamics in glyoxal will be presented.
