Abstract

Infrared spectra of single crystals of two polymorphic forms of propanoic acid have been obtained using polarized radiation. A vibrational assignment has been made for the observed frequencies of one polymorph based on the polarization results and the known crystal structure. The second polymorph has been assigned by analogy to the spectra of the first polymorph. Evidence indicates that the second polymorph has a hydrogen-bonded dimer structure like the first polymorph. In addition, the infrared and Raman spectra of liquid propanoic acid have been obtained and the observed frequencies assigned on the basis that a hydrogen-bonded dimer structure also exists in the liquid state. The assignment of the vapor spectra of both the monomeric and dimeric acids has been made.
