Abstract

In addition to the classical $\ell$ type doublings for $K =\pm 1$, $\ell = \pm 1$, much smaller splittings have been observed in the rotational spectra of the $v_{8} = 3$ state of $CH_{3}$ $^{14}$NC and $CH_{3}$ $^{15}$NC, for $K = \pm 3 \ell = \pm 3$. These splittings, which have been measured for the $J = 7 \rightarrow 8$ and $8 \rightarrow 9$ transitions, are of about one megahertz. Two kinds of calculations have been performed on this phenomenon. On one hand, a diagonalization of the complete energy matrix has been computed. On the other hand, a partial diagonalization of the matrix has been performed, which involves the only K=$\pm 1, \ell = \pm 1$ and $K =\pm 3, \ell = \pm 3$ levels; this last method gives an analytical expression which explains the reciprocal influence of the K $= \pm 3, \ell = \pm 3$ splitting on the l type doubling.
