Abstract

China has the world's largest population and an economy with unprecidented economic growth. This is causing demand for food to grow faster than China is able to supply it. This paper is a preliminary exploration of aggregate food inputs to food production, particularly investigating whether water contamination has an impact. While overall results are inconclusive, findings suggest that water contaminants are reasonably correlated with food production, which calls for further study and a greater push for monitoring of the UN Millenium Development Goals.
