Abstract

The out-of-plane ring vibrations of 1,3-dioxolane have previously been investigated. These modes can be represented by a nearly free pseudorotation and a radial motion. We have initiated a reinvestigation of the far-infrared spectra of this molecule in order to determine a two-dimensional potential energy surface for the out-of-plane modes. Pseudorotational bands have been observed in the 30-120 $cm^{-1}$ range and the radial vibration in combination with various pseudorotational states gives rise to spectra between 140 and 360 $cm^{-1}$. The perturbation effect of a small barrier to pseudorotation on the lower pseudorotational energy levels has been examined. These results will be compared to those of 1,3-oxathiolane.
