Abstract

Supported molybdenum oxide on alumina or silica-alumina catalysts are important in various industrial processes. Most importantly, such catalysts are useful for the hydrodesulfurization of petroleum and coal. While vibrational data for such systems are difficult to obtain from their infrared spectra, primarily because of the intense absorption by the support materials, Raman spectroscopy offers the potential of obtaining definitive structural data because these support materials are only weak scatterers in the Raman effect. Raman spectra of a series of commercially available supported catalysts of various concentrations of molybdenum oxide have been recorded. Different structural features related to the concentration of active components and, presumably, the methods of manufacture, are found. Assignment of the observed catalyst bands to specific structures will be given. In addition, spectra and assignments will be reported for such catalysts after specific chemical treatments; i.e., after sulfidation, after use in a coal liquefaction reactor, and after treatments designed to regenerate the catalysts.
