Abstract

The fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra of biphenyl in a cyclohexane shpol’ skii matrix are sharp. We shall present vibrational analyses and compare the spectra with those obtained in rare gas matrices by Baca, Rossetti, and $Brus^{1}$. We have also studied the luminescence spectra of the three unique monochloro-derivatives of biphenyl. The substitutional position dependence of the excited decay rates, both from $S_{1}$ and $T_{1}$ will be discussed.
