Abstract

SVL fluorescence spectra are presented from a variety of individual vibronie levels in isolated $^{1} B_{2u}$ benzene molecules. Their assignments are discussed, and it is shown that all assignments use a common small set of vibrational modes. The assignments are consistent with the selection rules used to interpret the $^{1} B_{2u}--^{1} A_{1g}$ absorption spectrum. These SVL fluorescence spectra can conveniently be used to confirm and in some cases revise assignmentes of the absorption spectrum. The assignment of the well known resonance fluorescence spectrum resulting from absorption of the 2537 ${\AA}$ Hg line is described.
