Abstract

Self-consistent-field plus large-scale configuration-interaction calculations within the space spanned by a large Slater basis have been carried out to determine potential curves and properties for the low-lying $^{2,4}\Pi, ^{2,4}\Sigma$, and $^{2}\Delta$ valence states of CH. Calculated molecular properties such as dissociation energies, electronic transition moments, lifetimes and dipole moments are compared to existing experimental data. Spectrally averaged cross-sections resulting from the electronic transitions are also described. These cross-sections contain contributions from transitions between bound states as well as transitions between bound and continuum states. The application of the theoretical results to the problem of entry into the atmospheres of the massive outer planets with carbonaceous heat shields is briefly discussed.
