ABSORPTION SPECTRA OF THE FUNDAMENTAL BAND OF GASEOUS HD AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

Abstract

In a recent $publication^{1}$ we have reported the experimental results on the absorption spectra of the fundamental band of HD in the pure gas for densities up to 50 amagat and in HD-He mixtures for total gas densities up to 190 amagat at room temperature. He have now extended the studies on this band to the binary mixtures of HD with Ne, Ar, and Kr for different base densities of HD in the range 6 to 20 amagat and for the perturbing gas densities up to 170 amagat. The main collision--induced features of the band in the pure gas and in the binary mixtures are similar to chose previously observed for the spectra of $H_{2}$ and $D_{2}$. In addition, the absorption profiles of the pure gas show the dipole-allowed sharp $R_{1}$(l) transition due to the individual HD molecules and the profiles of the enhancement of absorption in HD-Kr reveal the induced $R_{1}$(l) transition. The binary and ternary absorption coefficients have been determined. An analysis of the profiles of enhancement of absorption of the band in the binary mixtures has been performed by assuming appropriate line shapes, and the three half-width parameters, $\delta_{d}$ and $\delta_{c}$ of the overlap transitions and $\delta_{q}$ of the quadrupolar transitions, have been obtained. The values of $\delta_{c}$ of the intercollisional interference dip of the Q branch increase with density of the perturbing gas and satisfy the relation, $\delta_{c} = ap - bp^{2}$ ($a \gg. b$). The results of the HD-Xe experiments which are in progress at the time of preparation of this abstract will also be presented.
