Abstract

Radical Puppetry's heart beat can still be heard today. The Dance of Dogs was a puppetry troupe from Ohio that criss-crossed the United States keeping the heritage of counter hegemonic discourse in puppetry alive. Puppetry was not always a folk art in which radical ideas were found. The conditions that made resistant voices strong in this art are explored in a historical context as the experiences of the Dance of Dogs are recounted. What makes puppetry a tool for rebellious voices? The answers of why puppetry has been vital as a radical art form are similiar today to when the Punch and Judy show was co-opted by itinerant street performers during the industrial revolution.
