Abstract

Vibronically well-resolved fluorescence spectra have been measured for nine different anthracenes in n-alkane Shpol ‘skii matrices at a temperature of ca. 12K. The solutions were frozen in a closed cycle refrigerator and a pulsed tunable dye laser excitation source was used for site selection. Among the substituents included in this study are halogens (bromine and. chlorine), methyl groups, and deuterons. Under the conditions of these experiments, the bandwidths of the individual bands are on the order of 0.1 nm. In this talk we shall compare the vibronic patterns of the different molecules, with emphasis on the systematic which are present. Features specific to a given molecule or particular position of substitution will be identified and discussed. Some analysis on geometric changes between the $S_{0}$, and $S_{1}$ states will also be provided.
