Abstract

Spectra of the $4.7 \mu$ band of CO were obtained after the radiation had passed through two cells containing mixtures of CO and $N_{2}$. The total pressure and CO concentration of the first cell were adjusted so that the absorption by it lay in “the square root region” and the total pressure and CO concentration in the second cell varied over a wide range. It was found that the total absorption of both cells can be expressed in the form \[ \int A(\nu)d\nu=2.89[w_{1}(P_{e1})^{0.8}+W_{2}(P_{e2})^{0.8}]^{0.54} \] where $w_{1}$= absorber concentration in cell 1 $P_{el}$= equivalent pressure in cell 1 $w_{2}$= absorber concentration in cell 2 $P_{e2}$= equivalent pressure in cell 2 Provided \[ 2\leq \int A(\nu)d\nu \leq 70\;cm^{-1} \] and \[ \begin{array}{ccc} 0.7\leq w_{1}(P_{e1})^{0.8}+w_{2}(P_{e2})^{0.8}\leq 350\\ w\;in\;atmos\;cm\\ P_{e}\;in\;mm\;Hg \end{array} \] W in atomos cm $P_{e}$ in mm Hg
