Abstract

Drawing on the lessons of the small farmer credit programs of the past, this paper discusses the determinants of financial viability of microenterprise credit programs. Emphasis is placed on protection from inflation, full-cost recovery, and vigorous loan collection. Experience suggest that viable programs are associated with greater client benefits. Other determinants of success are specialization, flexible financial policies, and portfolio diversification.
