Abstract

The conference marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations' An Agenda for Peace. This landmark document, building on knowledge and insight provided by both peace researchers and U.N. practitioners in the field, focused attention on building peace in the long-term in war-torn societies. As a consequence of its publication, non-military sources of instability and violence became explicit factors shaping UN peace planning and the notion of peace-building gained common currency.
