Abstract

Laser excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra of the organomagnesium radicals, $MgC_{5}H_{5}$, $MgC_{5}H_{4}CH_{3}$ and $MgC_{4}H_{4}N$ will be presented. This study represents the first spectroscopic observation of these transient species in the gas phase. Extensive vibrational structure, originating from both metal ring and intra-ring vibrations, has been observed. From this structure, we will show that the Mg atom is most likely located above the ring in a pentahapto or ring-bonding scheme. We will also employ the excitation spectra of the deuterated isotopomers, $MgC_{5}D_{5}$, and $MgC_{4}D_{4}N$ in the vibrational analysis.
