Abstract

The field gradient at the deuteron in deuterated formaldehyde has been measured by high-resolution microwave spectroscopy. The principal field gradient components, all in units of esu- $cm^{-3}$, are: $q_{\alpha\alpha} (C-H bond axis) = (8.4 \pm .8)\times 10^{14}, q_{\beta\beta}= (-4.1 \pm .4)\times 10^{14}$, and $q_{\gamma\gamma}$ (perpendicular molecular plane) = $(-4.3 \pm .4)\times 10^{14}$. The field gradient has also been calculated, with all two and three-center integrals evaluated by the method of Coulson and Barnett. A comparison of the calculated values with experimental results and with other field gradient calculations will be made.
