Abstract

Enthalpies (ΔH) from −4 to −12 k cal/mole and hydroxyl frequency shifts (Δν) from <100 to >1000cm−1 have been observed for the hydrogen bonds between homologous series of alcohols and homologous series of ethers and amines in the vapor phase. In general Δν increases as ΔH increases, but in certain cases Δν decreases as ΔH increases. The significance of these relationships will be discussed.
