Abstract

The absorption spectrum of copper has been investigated for crystals in which the copper is tetrahedrally coordinated by oxide ions. At low temperatures the absorption spectrum typically exhibits two or more electronic lines with associated vibrational structure. In ZnO crystals doped with copper, the electronic lines are sharp enough for Zeeman measurements. The zero-field splittings of the electronic lines, the vibrational structure, and the Zeeman patterns will be discussed in terms of the crystal field model.
