Abstract

Seven of the IV - VI compounds (germanium, tin and lead sulfides and selenides and germanium telluride) have been matrix isolated in solid argon or nitrogen and spectra of the monomeric and dimeric species recorded in the infrared. The infrared spectra of a few cases of mixed dimers of IV - VI compounds have also been observed and the dimer vibrations treated in terms of a planar ring structure. Attempts to obtain the pure vibrational Raman spectra of the matrix-isolated molecules have been unsuccessful to date but laser-excited emission bands have been observed and attributed to both monomers and dimers.
