Abstract

The dipole moment of NO in the $a^{4}\pi$ state has been recently measured by Lisy and Klemperer (1) and found to equal to $0.20 \pm 0.04$ D for the v = 3 level of this state. But because of the low beam intensities developed in this experiment that prevented electric resonance measurements, the direction of this dipole moment could not be determined. Ab initio calculations of the dipole moment functions have been performed. A theoretical value of 0.225 D has been obtained with a polarity $N^{+}O^{-}$ for this state as in the $X^{2}\pi$ ground state.
