Abstract

Gas phase spectra of the niobium dimer molecule have been recorded for the first time. A cw ring dye laser was used to excite fluorescence in a supersonic expansion containing niobium dimers generated by laser vaporisation. The experimental resolution was 200 MHz. Four band systems have been observed in the 650-690 nm spectral region. Two of these systems have been assigned as $^{1}\Gamma_{u} \leftarrow ^{1}\Gamma_{g}$ and $^{1}\Sigma_{u} \leftarrow ^{1}\Sigma_{g}$ transitions. Analysis of the other two systems is in progress. Experimental results will be compared with the results of ab initio calculations.
