Abstract

In the vacuum ultraviolet emission spectrum of molecular hydrogen excited by impact of monoenergetic fast electrons, intensity ratios of rotational lines originating at the same upper Level $v^{\prime}$, $J^{\prime}$ have been measured. The experimental results are compared with calculated branching ratios which take into account rotation-vibration interaction as included in the Franck-Condon factor, as well as the variation of electronic transition moment with the r-centroid of the transition $v^{\prime}$, $J^{\prime} \rightarrow$ $v^{\prime} 1$ , $J^{\prime} 1$ . Large discrepancies occur between the experimental and the calculated branching ratios for the 2p $^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{u}\rightarrow$ 1s $^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{g}$ Lyman band system. The deviations observed exhibit the typical behavior of heterogeneous perturbation by the adjacent 2p $^{1}\Pi_{u}$ electronic state.
