Abstract

CaOH and CaOD are formed in the gas phase by the reaction of $H_{2}O$ and $D_{2}O$ with Ca vapor entrained in a flow of argon. Using a RhB dye laser with a bandwidht of about 0.01 nm, we have observed the laser excitation spectra of the $A^{2}\Pi-X^{2}\Sigma$ transitions near 625 nm. The spectra show that the ground states of CaoH and CaOD are rotationally and vibrationally relaxed with a temperature of about $1000^{\circ} K$ . The following preliminary values of the spin-orbit and vibrational parameters (in $cm^{-1}$) have been determined: For CaOH: A=67(1); $\omega_{1e}^{\prime\prime} = 612(2); \omega_{1e} x_{1e}^{\prime\prime} = 3(2); \omega_{2e}^{\prime\prime} = 317(10)$. For CaOD: A=67 (1); $\omega_{1e}^{\prime\prime} = 609(2); \omega_{1e} x_{1e}^{\prime\prime} = 3(2); \omega_{2e}^{\prime\prime} = 224(10)$. A rotational analysis of these molecules is in progress.
