Abstract

Laser oscillation on pure rotational transitions in NH have been observed, the preparation of the molecule in the excited $^{1}\Delta$ state is accomplished by flash photolysis of $HN_{3}$. The rotational population inversions are established through vibration-rotation energy transfer induced by collision with rare gas atoms. This lasing has been assigned to the law vibrational states of the $a^{1}\Delta$ and $A^{3}\Pi$ excited electronic states. Triplet state oscillation is obtained only with Xe as a collision partner which induces the intersystem crossing.
