Abstract

The results from a study of the time-resolved production of HCO from simple carbonyl compounds will be presented. The time dependent concentration of HCO was monitored by time-resolved intracavity laser detection (TRILD). TRILD measurements provide information on the relative yield of the time required for formation of HCO from the excited states of a carbonyl, the specific amount of vibrational and rotational energy in the radical, and the dominant decay process. When using a tuned, narrow bandwidth photolysis laser, the resulting kinetic and spectroscopic data can be directly related to the excited state(s) of the dissociating carbonyl molecule. The general role of HCO in the dissociation of carbonyls, such as butyraldehyde and glyoxal, will be discussed in terms of competitive dissociation channels and the related molecular bonding.
