Abstract

The dependence of the first excited vibrational state (0, 1, 0, 0) inversion splitting $E_{INV} (1, J, K)$, on the rotational quantum numbers J and K has been determined from precise line frequencies in the $\nu_{2}$ band and precise values for the energy levels in the ground vibrational state of the ammonia molecule. The coefficients in an exponential series expansion of $E_{INV} (1, J, K)$ in terms of J and K are determined. The resulting values for $E_{INV} (1, J, K)$ are estimated to be accurate to $0.00071 cm^{-1} (J, K\leq 15)$. The inversion splitting in the rotationless upper state, $E_{INV} (1, 0, 0)$ is found to be $35.68780 cm^{-1}$, in reasonable agreement with earlier results of lower accuracy and in excellent agreement with the most recent results - - $35.68728 \pm 0.00020$ $cm^{-1}$.
