RELATING COLLISION-INDUCED CROSS SECTIONS TO INTERMOLECULAR WELL DEPTH

There now exist many gas phase studies in which the cross sections for destroying a given quantum state of a molecule are known for a variety of collision partners. Examples include destruction of a quantum state by collision-induced nonradiative transitions, collision-induced predissociation, rotational energy transfer and vibrational energy transfer. The relative magnitudes of the cross sections $\sigma$ may be correlated fairly well in many cases by the simple relationship In $\sigma \alpha \epsilon$ where $\epsilon$ is the intermolecular well depth between the decaying molecule and the collision partner. Accounts of the correlation based either on ""complex"" formation or the radial distribution function will be given. Experimental checks of the indicated temperature-dependence of these cross sections will be described.
